Usually, a garage does not often look like it is a part of the house. It is often neglected and is merely relegated to being just a usable space. A garage doesn’t have to be an eyesore. Garage floor coating is a great way to give your garage a more polished look. There are various materials that can be used for garage floor coatings. However, just a word of advice, regardless of how good they advertise garage floor paints to be, they just don’t last long. Floor paints usually end up chipping and delaminating as a result of hot tires constantly running through it. The good thing though is--you don’t have to deal with this. There is a better alternative—garage floor epoxies.

Compared to using garage floor paint, you’ll stand a better chance in using a high performance epoxy. It is probably one of the most durable garage floor coatings. They work particularly well on concrete flooring. Generally, properly applied epoxy can last over ten years with no obvious wear and tear. It can hold itself very well to heavy floor traffic, pressure, spills and other common damaging factors. It is resistant to chemical-based products such as gasoline, brake fluid, transmission fluid and more. These fluids usually leak from the car and can accumulate on the floor. They can be instantly damaging to a less durable floor coating. Floor paints will usually give in, soften up and eventually peel when it comes in contact with these fluids.

A garage floor epoxy coating kit includes two containers. One contains resin and the other one contains hardener. Prior to application, the floor surface has to be cleaned thoroughly with soap and water, followed by a muriatic acid solution. This removes all the debris or stains that can affect the quality of the coating. The resin and hardener are then mixed together. Due to its consistency, it may be wise to use a power drill with an auger attached. This can effectively mix the solution together with lesser effort in your part. When everything is all set, the application process can now be implemented. Using a roller, the mixture is evenly spread out and left to dry.

The amount of time for garage floor coatings to dry is dependent on the temperature in the room. The warmer the temperature is, the faster the drying time. It is recommended that when applying coating, to do so in a warmer season. If it is not possible, then, a heater may help. A temperature of 60 degree Fahrenheit is an ideal temperature for drying. The floor can usually be walked on after a 24 hour period. A few days after, it will be already hardened and will be ready to take on heavier items.

Curing floor coatings is one way to make it more durable. It is resistant to all kinds of abuse. In fact, welding sparks--for as long as produced from a bench level height--cannot do any damage to a cured floor coating. Unlike other garage floor coatings, it can withstand hot temperatures.
